My Exclusive Conversation with Blake McGinnis

My Excluive Interview with Blake McGinnis "Gary" of 180
180 Film

Recently I had a chance via email to speak to 180 Film's own Blake McGinnis who plays the bass player Gary in the movie 180!! I would like to say a special thanks to 180's Nick Kime for helping me setup this interview and to Blake for being wonderful enough to take time to do one with me. Blake really blew me away as he started giving me information about himself. He has a lot of credentials to be proud of as shall be shown below. Again thanks to Blake for being so cool! Stay in touch! Throughout the interview, Blake has kindly provided me with links to videos of his productions he has made. Please check out each of these. Blake is pretty talented! Thanks Blake for these!

Photobucket

BP: Thank you Blake for submitting to this interview. I am very excited about 180 and think it will make for an awesome movie! With this in mind, how did you come across 180?

Blake: I actually came to knowledge of 180's production by my OTC professor Mr. Spear. He had gotten an e-mail by Nick Kime, I think, who was wanting to check with the local media teachers for any students who they think would be good for a film spot. I checked out the links given to me quickly and crossed checked all I had found with another media teacher of mine, Mrs. Gambriel. She found the local project to be just as exciting as I had and had gotten the same e-mail as Mr. Spear.
Quickly, I learned that they were looking for crew members and excepting applications of all kinds in the coming month. My only goal as to be part of 180 was to have a technical job of some sort. I read of 180's casting call and only decided to go to meet crew members, but ended up being liked for acting with the few parts I tried for.

(editor's note the video below is hilarious!)

BP: Did you originally audition for the role of Gary and please tell us more about Gary?

Blake: Of the three parts I tried out for, Gary was one of them. I went to the casting call only to tryout for Gary and the part as a waiter. After a quick few tryouts in front of the casting directors, involving multiple people including Nathan Pope and Christopher Johnson, I was asked to tryout for "Hooky".

I was told they liked everything and almost guaranteed an acting role in the film. Of course, I was super excited but more was I surprised. I had never acted in a Real film before nor have I ever done theatre. My only acting has been for school projects or other related videos. This was a big step.

Later as I heard of my scheduled trip to Kansas City for Nationals in video production was in the middle of 180's production, I was quickly knocked out of a technical position.

(ed note: hahahahaha!!! I love it!)

This hit me in the pants as bad news but quickly I was e-mailed by Christopher Johnson to tell me I had solidified the spot for "Gary".
If you don't know him yet, Gary is a clueless, Bass Guitar player that finds nothing more pleasing in life than to play at a local bar for cheap cash. He is asked by "Gavin Larson" to join his newly reforming band but quickly shoots him down with the thought of his own talent and position as a "Bar artist" to be much more prestigious.

He is a complete tool but a lot of fun to play with cast and crew laughing at my in character improv. :)

(ed note: Below is Blake's first music video. Well done!)

BP: Cool! What have you focused on so far on your studies there and congratulations on your upcoming graduation and Associates Degree!!!

Blake: - Yes, I am about to complete my Associates of Applied Science Degree at OTC in Electronic Media Production. This degree has put me under the work of Radio, still and video camera operation, news studio productions, and live music recording. I have focused on video production. This is the aspect of film (movies) which I really want to be a part of.

BP: Is 180 your first movie? Please tell us a bit about your background?

Blake: Yes it is my first professional movie part. As I had listed in an earlier e-mail, I am completing my Associates in Applied Science of Electronic Media Production. With this degree I have been training with radio and all aspects of video and still camera productions. I've completed many small films and videos for fun, class, and competition but never anything of profitable scale. I've competed in SATO 48, a forty-eight hour film competition, for three years now and in the same few years, competed for OTC and then the State of Missouri under SkillsUSA, the national organization for competing Technical schools, in TV (Video) Production. In the June of 2010, my team of Cherokee Turner and myself, won Gold at the Nationals competition.

Growing up on an Arabian horse farm in Rogersville Missouri has surprisingly lead me to movies. My mother created promotional movies for her show horses and has always been very involved with photography. Her work in media probably developed my understanding for in and, later in life, drive.

( ed note: Below is a commercial Blake created for Career Technical Education ACTE.org Very well done!)

BP: Awesome stuff! Please tell us more about SATO 48 Films Competition. Please share with us more about this competition as it sounds very cool!

Blake's SATO 48 Submission
Link clicks to Blake's youtube

Blake: SATO48 (Springfield And The Ozarks)48 is a challenge made every early spring here in Springfield, MO for local Filmmakers to dedicate "all free" time and effort to make a 5 minute film in exactly 48 hours. The film must be made from complete scratch and include specific objects and/or criteria. It is unimaginable fun for everyone involved. After the chaos of production is over, the stories left to tell about your own adventure of making your film is worth the fifteen dollar entry fee. One of the best parts of SATO is that All the films are later shown at a local movie theatre for the public.

(ed note: this is Blake's second SATO 48 Films submission. I am impressed!)

I was first introduced to it by the organizers of the competition themselves, Jeff Clinkenbeard and Kyaw Tha Hla at OTC when they spoke to some media students in promotion of the even. Of course, I was on board quickly with participating and made a team of three, Myself, my former film partner Dustin Stomboly, and friend Kaylyn Oldham. We had competed for two years and this last year Dustin and I competed in a new team including friends Austin Barton and Jamie Ray.

BP: That is so awesome!! I would like to say a huge Congrats on taking gold in the Skills USA competition with your partner, Cherokee Tumer! Please tell us more about this competition and what you guys submitted to win Gold:

Blake: Thank you very much! Yes, Cherokee Turner and I have taken Gold for Missouri in the National level competition of SkillsUSA this year. SkillsUSA is the national organization connecting all technical schools in the United States for competition under specific skill platforms. The skill my partner and I competed in was TV (Video) Production. We are, in fact, are only the second team to ever take gold for Missouri in Video Production. The first team had actually come from OTC as well, years back.

(ed note: Blake's 1st SATO 48 film entry. Nicely done!)

BP: What was it like working with the various cast in 180 such as Coach Wade, Steve Ewing, Vanessa Leinani, Danielle Di Lorenzo and Chelsea Russell?

Blake: Working with so many people at such a constant high pace, stresses my little brain into finding it very hard to match every name with a face. But, with every person I was able to meet in my short time with 180, there was not one person who did not have a smile while shaking hands and telling a joke. The entire cast and crew molded together quickly as a fun team. Little work seemed to be getting done as all the shots, takes, and scenes came with a lot of ease and fun the whole way through.

Photobucket

I did have a good chance to meet Coach one on one. Before our scene together, in the wee hours of the morning, we spent some time together off set running through lines, bouncing ideas on characters, and just chatting a bit. Through the whole production time I spent with Coach he was always holding a smile and helping everyone have a good time.

Thou I did not get to work with him on 180, a good friend of mine, Austin Barton, held a position as a former band member to "Gavin". We found it great that both of us being OTC students and film geeks to be playing on the set of the same 2 million dollar movie. :)

Deom Ace's Legendary Channel comes this music video gem from Austin Barton, a performance made to the song "Feeling Good" which Blake did a cool performance in)

BP: What are your personal thoughts about your experience filming 180 and what do you see in the future for the movie and for us fans when it premieres?

Blake: From the experience I had as part of 180 and how I saw the production gears at work, I think that the audience is going to see and feel a very relaxed and "real" tone to the characters in 180. Nathan Pope and his list of assistants and crew really held the shoulder to all the actors I saw. They really gave them leeway to giving personal emotion to a fictional character the actor was to play. For me, I was always instructed or heard terms of, "How would he act?", "What do you think he would feel about that?".

If all goes from what i've seen, the movie should hold real emotion to the fans and even those who haven't yet got to hear about it.

Photobucket

BP: This is all so cool! So with all this experience under your belt, will you be acting more in the future or will you be concentrating on a career in the production area?

Blake:
I don't plan to pursue a career as an actor but I hope to become a full length film director. Planned for the August of 2011, I wish to begin educating my self at Full Sail University for a Bachelor's Degree in Film.

BP: Thank you sooo much for taking time to do this for us and it sounds like you have done very very well in the competitions you have competed in and I think with all of this experience under your belt you will do a great job in the production capacity! Please keep us updated on all you are doing and don't be a stranger! :)

Blake: - Thank you very much for taking time with little Ol' me here in Rogersville, MO. I hope my plans and work do take flight to add more to my story for you.

Thanks again,
Blake
